Today’s warm-up started with two Which One Doesn’t Belong activities. The second part of the warm-up introduced solve-me mobiles. If you haven’t checked out either of these resources, have a look because they are a great way to get your students talking about math.
Next, I put the students in random groups using playing cards and we continued to work on solving equations with parallel number lines. Today I projected several questions on the board and did not get out the string, magnets and the dry erase tent cards. Instead, I had students recreate the questions and fill in their work on the large whiteboards.
Today I included some questions with fractions as well as questions with negative integers. Most groups were able to eventually figure it out. We consolidated our learning as we went through the problems.
Next, we looked at another visual linear pattern. Students sketched position 0 and position 4 and looked for a general rule to help them determine the number of blocks at position 100. We talked about how organizing information into a table of values might help organize their thoughts. Finally, groups plotted each point on a coordinate plane and noticed that the points made a straight line.
That brought us to the end of day 7. Seventy-five-minute classes sure go by fast when the students are engaged. I love the buzz in the air after these lessons.
That’s it for today. I hope something here was able to help you on your teaching journey.
Have a great rest of your day!
