March 9, 2022.
As we approach our March Break, our grade 9 team wanted to get in part 1 of our cycle 1 test before the break and then have a day to review prior to part 2 when we return.
I started class with the Would You Rather math problem we didn’t have time to finish yesterday. We reviewed our depreciation terminology and the class worked through the problem. Most students set up a table to organize their solutions. I reminded students that they need to make a concluding statement that states which one they would rather buy and explain why.
Yesterday we used Desmos to graph linear relations, but today we needed to practice graphing manually without the use of technology.
We worked through 3 different examples together. We talked about each step of the process, starting with plotting the y-intercept and then from that point using our slope to get more points on our line. I reminded the class about rise over run and to look at the equation to see if the slope was positive or negative or whether it was a steep line or a shallow line. We talked about extending the line all the way to the edge of their Cartesian plane, drawing arrowheads at the end of their line, and finally labeling their line. Once they got the hang of this, we moved on to our test review.
Since we were spiraling the content, cycles ended up being quite big, especially the first cycle because we were laying the foundation. We needed to split the cycle 1 test into two parts. Each part would be 1-page front and back to allow lots of time for thinking and processing for those that needed it.
We first reviewed solving equations using parallel number lines. Some students didn’t need the double number line and jumped right to the algorithm. On the test, we worded the question, so that they could use the double number line if it helps. Next, we simplified expressions using the correct order of operations (BEDMAS). We then looked at simplifying polynomial expressions using our organizational chart method. I reminded students of the Boom Card decks that they could go back and try as a way to review the material if they needed more practice.
Next, we practiced a couple more graphing linear relations problems.
We wrapped up our review with 2 appreciation problems.
Students could practice appreciation and depreciation problems with these two Boom Card Decks.
We finished the class off with some consolidation pages.
All of the review problems we worked through were VERY similar to our actual test questions, we just changed out the numbers.
This brought us to the end of the period.
I hope something here was able to help you on your teaching journey.
Have a wonderful day!
