March 10, 2022.
Today was our first test. Before we began part one we did a bit of a warm-up, to get the brain going.
First, we practiced graphing the equation of a line. I reminded the class about the steps required to earn full marks… start with the y-intercept, plot more points using the rate of change (slope) and then connect the dots using a ruler. They were also reminded to extend the line all the way to the edge of their Cartesian grid and include arrowheads and label their line.
Next, we looked at a linear relation word problem. Students represented the information given in a table of values, wrote the equation of the line, and then sketched a graph.
We used the equation from the Mr. Brown question to calculate how much would be in the account after 25 weeks. Most students were able to make the substitution, but some needed a reminder to use the correct order of operations to solve.
We then looked at a typical linear equation word problem with this banquet hall problem.
We wrapped up our final warm-up question with this combining like terms problem.
After we were all warmed up, it was time to start part one of the test. The class had about 45 minutes by the time I distributed the assessment and went over the questions. Most of my pre-IB group finished in about 20-25 minutes, but my non-IB group took the majority of the allotted time except for a few fast finishers.
That’s all for today.
I hope something here was able to help you on your teaching journey.
Have a fantastic day!
