For today’s warm-up, we looked at an Open-Middle fraction problem. We placed the number 1 after the equal sign to narrow down the possibilities. Lots of great answers were given. The solutions gave us an opportunity to discuss why each answer worked.
Next, we went to the boards in our random groups to work on more visual linear pattern problems. Just like yesterday, students determined the number of blocks at positions 0 and 4, then came up with the general rule for the pattern. They used their general rule to calculate how many blocks would be at step 100.
Students then organized their information into a table, which helped them to graph the relation.
Students looked at a third visual linear pattern and that brought us to the end of our lesson on linear patterns.
We still had a few minutes left in class, so instead of giving them idle time, of course, I had more math problems for them to think about. We switched gears and looked at fractions. That is the beauty of spiraling the curriculum, we can be flexible with what topic we teach. I could easily connect fractions to our warm-up question, so I thought it made sense.
This brought us to the end of day 8.
I hope you were able to find something helpful here in your teaching journey.
Have a fantastic day!
